The 16th birthday is a big one. A lot more freedom and I can't think of anyone I trust more than Kael to handle that freedom responsibly. They say the teenage years can be tough on parents but so far Kael has made it easy for us! One of Kael's best friends recently got his license and they've had fun driving around getting slushies at Casey's and going to other friends' houses and I know Kael can't wait to get his full license tomorrow morning!
He enjoys spending time with family and is never too old or too col for our fun family traditions- plus he was the egg cracking champion two years in a row!
He had a great football season and he's in the middle of track season right now- I love that he is trying something new and doing the shot put this year. He is so strong and has taken such an interest in lifting- some days he goes before school with his football team, then lifts during PE and then rides his bike to Aspen at night to do a little more. He's dedicated and proud of how strong he is.
I love when Kael's funny side comes out like when he was doing air guitar in front of the Hard Rock on vacation. He sometimes shows me memes that may not be funny to me but he just can't help but crack up but I can always tell when he's seen something funny on his phone and it's hilarious to watch him try not to laugh out loud.
We've recently entered some new territory. A girl at church was interested in Kael and they spent a lot of time on the phone together and hanging out together at church events. In the end, she decided she didn't really want a relationship but it was a good first experience for Kael as far as having a "girl"friend goes.
Right now Kent and Kael are pretty good buddies. They have a similar sense of humor, interest in music, movies and definitely weightlifting. I'm glad he and his dad are so close.
Kael is the oldest one every where we go for family stuff. He is the best big cousin and always happy to hold the littlest ones and play with the middle ones.
He loves food. So much. He's just so easy to please and such a teenage boy. He's not picky at all and even wanted to try sushi recently!
He says "I love you" to me when he leaves the house and at bedtime no matter what. He also even says it in front of his friends, and when stumbling sleepily out the door in the early morning for lifting.
This year he wanted to go out for dinner with friends and that's all. He didn't want a sleepover or even a birthday cake with his buddies and definitely didn't want us all to sing to him.
Kael is so grown up and understanding of the fact that it's a busy day for our family- sports practices for all three kids so we won't all be home at the same time until late tonight- so he knows he won't get to open gifts until then and he was totally fine with that. So easy going. He did, however try to peek in one of the gift bags before school though which made me laugh. I love seeing glimpses of him still being an excited kid about his birthday.
Kael is also always so thoughtful. The other night he was working the concession stand for silver cord hours and he texted me his job was doing hot chocolate. Imagine my surprise when he walked in the door after his shift with a hot chocolate for me! So sweet.
Kael is never cold and proud of it. He is a tough ping pong opponent and is the only one in the house who has beaten Kent. He is kind, respectful, and always willing to help. Kent often wonders how my own dad got along with only having girls- it seems Kent is always asking Kael, "Hey come here for a minute and help me move/lift/carry this" and Kael always does. We are so lucky to have been blessed with this buddy for 16 years and I can't wait to see where especially the next few take him.
We had such a great night celebrating Kael and he was so patient, knowing we couldn't do gifts and ice cream cake until later in the night when Kylee got home.
This morning Kent took Kael to get his actual real driver's license! So exciting! They celebrated at IHOP after.
