Weekend Wrap-Up

We've been filling our time with some fun!

Last week Kase hung out with my dad and mom for awhile then later the whole gang went fishing.  I think they were all ready for a break from me as we have spent a LOT of time together so I stayed home and relaxed.  It was so nice.

We've been keeping busy with art class (play-doh) and I've been teaching some mini Spanish lessons.  Other than that we haven't been hitting the homeschooling too hard.  We've had some fun bike rides to families' new houses!

The big deal of the weekend was Keith and Cindy moving to Ankeny! Kent and Kael were a huge help packing and loading and Kylee was instrumental in unpacking and organizing.  Kase was there mostly for entertainment value and I provided food! Ha.  We make a great team and it was a busy weekend getting them settled and we are SO happy to have them in Ankeny now!! Love their new place!

We've had family movie nights, lots of fun family walks and Saturday night Kylee and I baked Cindy her favorite cookies.  Sunday after we watched church online, we had a family cleaning day.  Everyone had a good attitude about it and I just cant believe how much we got done! We treated the kids to some ice cream and also stopped by my sisters to see their new puppy and stopped by my parents' house too.

We spent the rest of the afternoon playing board games (Perudo and Genius Square were super fun) then playing family knockout, going for a walk and playing a family game of football.  Excited to settle in here in a few minutes for a movie night with popcorn!

Thankful Thursday

I'm thankful for a video from my mom- she and my dad had been watching old family videos and she came across one of Kael learning to count.  It was the cutest thing.

I'm thankful for Kylee- spreading joy where she can.

I'm thankful for Zoom and FaceTime.  It's been fun getting to "see" people! I'm thankful for technology in general really.  And also WordScapes.  Kylee and I have been having so much fun!

I'm thankful for Kylee's motivation.  Girl is setting her goals high and encouraging the rest of us to do the same.

I'm thankful for Legos! They never fail to entertain the kids.

I'm thankful for a fun, fancy lunch yesterday.  The kids loved it and I've found that when I try harder to be fun, they try harder to have better attitudes.

I'm thankful for the Bear Hunt going on around town!

I'm thankful that Kylee helped me plant some beautiful pansies! We also started a few seeds for our garden.  Also thankful for this gorgeous sunset in the reflection! (Realizing I have lots of comments about Kylee in this post- can you tell she is liking "homeschool" more than the boys?!)

I'm thankful for a family fire pit on Tuesday night.  Our normal, busy schedule would never have allowed time to all be home together and make s'mores on a week night but here we are! Living it up!

I'm thankful for my parents helping entertain Kase yesterday morning while I had a quick preschool meeting!

I'm thankful that Kent's parents are moving to Ankeny tomorrow! Hooray!

Weekend Wrap-Up

Trying to find our new normal here- today is the first "back to (a different, weird) reality" day since the kids should have been back at school.  We're navigating being home together and coming up with ways to entertain ourselves.  Here's a little of what we've been up to.

Drove through newly opened Smokey Row and walked around The District a little bit.  Fun!

We've been baking.  A lot.  Here is Kase putting the finishing touches on his coffee cake.

We've been doing daily workouts and the kids are having fun challenging and encouraging each other. Also Kase is doing a puzzle which we have been doing a lot of too!

Kylee built this epic blanket fort in the basement.  She is so proud of it and the kids have had a ton of fun hanging out in there.  Kylee and Kase have eaten lunch in there several times and Kylee has slept down there every night since she built it!

We've been social distancing but still getting outside. We took a long walk out at Cherry Glen the other day.

We also had a silly string fight in our front yard!

And a walk at Gray's Lake.  We were all surprised to see a couple loons there and Kase especially had fun trying to guess where it would pop back up after it dove down into the water.

We've face timed family (got to see my sister's new dog!), texted friends (how are you entertaining your people today?) and we've even busted out the old school Nintendo where I blew my kids' minds about how good I am at Tetris. I've still got it- ha.

Today the kids are taking turns teaching each other things.  Kase did his version of Media Class at school- Kael and Kylee each came to his room and checked out a book, then Kase showed them a video of a coral reef and they each told him something they had learned about it.  Soon, we're going to play "Trash-ketball", led by Kylee.  I think everyone has to answer math facts then gets a chance to shoot a bouncy ball in an empty trash can. Later, Kael is teaching us a little about states and capitals  and I'm going to work in a mini Spanish lesson if I can keep their interest.

And honestly, there's been plenty of screen time.  We've watched movies together nearly every night.  Kids have enjoyed keeping up with friends on their devices- Kase recently has been allowed to text a bunch of his friends so he's had a lot of fun with that.  Kael continues to Pokemon but gets a lot of fresh air and some decent exercise walking around outside.

We're all hanging in there.  Sad about cancelled plans but doing the best we can.  Kylee found out today her beloved Jaguar Running Club has officially been cancelled for the year and her coach is moving so she'll never get the chance to train with him again.  This truly is an event our kids will never forget. Hope you and your families are well!

Thankful Thursday

I'm thankful for Kylee.

I'm thankful for family who are nearby who help keep us entertained!

I'm thankful that everyone is staying healthy.

I'm thankful to be a teacher and be home with my kids without having to worry about childcare for them while everything is shut down.

I'm thankful we have enough.

Weekend Wrap-Up

Hello! Hope this post finds you all well as we are in such an uncertain time in our nation.  Needless to say, our travel plans to Universal for Spring Break have been indefinitely postponed because of the coronavirus but we are trying to make the most of it.  Here's what we've been up to.

Baking.  A lot of baking. We're trying to balance out all the sweets by doing extra workouts.  Kids have been so good about running or bike riding each day.

We made Kase's birthday favors for his class (if he ever gets back to school- if not, we can gift them to neighborhood friends).  "Jump UP and DOWN and celebrate! Kase is 8!"

Took a social distancing excursion to the Sculpture Park.  It felt great to be outside and kids had so much fun exploring.  And also playing Pokémon Go.

We also stopped by the Capitol and kids raced up the stairs.  Kael was the uncontested winner and proved himself again later on a big hill!

We went back again the next day because Kent couldn't find his credit card and we thought it might be there.  This time it was with Tyson and my dad! Meanwhile, Kylee and Brooklyn were at Grandma's baking brownies.

Later Brooklyn joined us for a movie at our house- she got her first car ride with big cousin Kael as a driver!

Kids woke up this morning to a few St. Patrick's surprises.  I had bought the shamrock necklaces for us to wear at Universal but they still enjoyed them!

We found out the kids are going to be off school for 4 weeks at least.  We are using the time to learn some new skills.  Kylee is worried she won't get to have Family Consumer Science at school this semester so she asked me to teach her how to sew.  She did great! We've been coming up with a list of skills the kids can learn over the next few weeks.

A few other things we've been up to- saw the movie Onward (before the social distancing suggestions came out) and it was so surprisingly good!  I didn't have super high expectations but it was a really sweet movie.   We also spent some time at the gym, got pedicures and had one last dinner out (again, before the social distancing).  Kylee had a big group of friends show up and play garage ping pong, order pizza and hang out all night.  We made chocolate chip cookies for them all and had such a fun night.  Tonight we have plans to see Kent's family and we are all looking forward to that.

We are trying to come up with lots of activities to do in the house and in the fresh air, but away from lots of people.  I'm looking forward to spending some extra time with my own people and being "forced" to slow down (no sports) is going to have us coming up with some creative things to do!

Thankful Thursday

I'm so thankful for Kylee and that other people notice how special she is too.  She came home from Team Awards day and she got three awards!! Sunshine (from her art teacher), Passion (from her PE teacher) and Encourager (from her Civ teacher).  Love this girl and am so proud of her.

I'm thankful for the times I catch Kael in a chatty mood.  The other night when we were watching the Jag basketball game, Kael was having so much fun telling me about his friends and stories from school.  He was laughing so hard and I loved hearing all about it.

Kase was super thankful for his Target gift card from Cindy that he finally got to spend! Walking around Target picking out new Pokémon cards was the perfect way to spend a rainy Monday afternoon!

I'm thankful that today is the last day of school before Spring Break! Can't wait to spend time with my people!
